Join GGTA, Help Preserve Rent Control and Quality of Life

Dear GGTA members –

Today I received a notice of my Gateway rent increase for the coming year, based on my January anniversary date.  It is one per cent.  (Your increase may vary based on your anniversary date.)  Thanks to the blessings of San Francisco rent control, we are not subject to the drastic rent increases that are caused by market rates.

We at GGTA remain alert for any attempts to revoke rent control or trim it back.  We support the community watch program begun earlier this year by Bob Demchick and recently handed off to Sue Rokaw, who presided at a meeting in October addressed by SFPD Central Station’s Captain David Lazar.

We met with management to discuss the spike in Gateway water bills.  We learned that a July 1 SFPUC rate increase combined with irregular meter reading intervals and a malfunctioning meter to cause the unexpected increases, that the meter reading intervals will even out, and that SFPUC has agreed to a $6,000 refund because of the meter malfunction.

Together with other neighborhood organizations including the Barbary Coast Neighborhood Association, we are attending meetings about the Port’s proposal to build an affordable rental housing project at Broadway and Front, the third one in our area.  We are exploring the possibility that there may be sources of funding to provide housing there for moderate-income residents as well as low-income residents.

We are also tracking a proposal by Teatro ZinZanni to build a small hotel and dinner theater with a small park on the triangular Port property at Broadway and the Embarcadero, now used as a parking lot.

Now is a good time for you to renew your membership in GGTA.  You can do that electronically on our website.  Or you can mail a check for $30 to GGTA at P.O. Box 2134, SF, CA 94126.  Renewing your GGTA membership makes you a nonvoting member of BCNA at no extra charge.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our First Tuesday social events at 5:30 p.m. at the Holding Company in Two Embarcadero Center, third level, and at our annual membership meeting on a date to be scheduled in February.  We will invite our new District 3 supervisor to speak at that meeting.

Best wishes – Bill Hannan, president
