Neighborhood Happenings with Alec Bash

• Battery/Sansome Quick-Build Project Bikeway: The SF Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Board of Directors approved the Battery/Sansome Quick-Build Bikeway Project on Sept 6th with staff changes addressing the GTA’s most critical concerns. We worked closely with the  Barbary Coast Neighborhood Association (BCNA), the community organization representing our neighborhood.. The protected two-way bikeway will include (1) left turns from Battery Street at Jackson Street and (2) a passenger loading zone in front of Vista West (550 Battery Street). See their final Proposed Design Illustratives – August 2022 at this link. The GTA put considerable effort into winning these changes, sought by our members and community. Construction is planned to begin soon.
• GTA Safety/Security Committee: The GTA Safety/Security Committee meets several times a year and works closely with The Gateway on these issues. We worked with management on the 3^rd-level podium to restrict public hours to sunrise to sunset, add wrap-around mirrors to its stairways, and prevent access to Townhome balconies. We’re dealing with tail-gating into buildings and secure package delivery, and the potential to require key-fobs for Vista Buildings’ elevator and stairway usage. Committee members are Jennifer Herman, John Kuehne, Kevin Prichard, Linda Dodge, Michele Hennessey, Shai Malka, Sharry Bash, Tiffany Lindsey, Vivek Mangel, Parli Barve, Rhoda Schneiderman, Phyllis Goodman and myself. • Pier 30-32 & Seawall Lot 330 bet. Bryant & Beale Streets: Strada & Trammel Crow are negotiating with the Port of San Francisco to demolish and reconstruct dilapidated Piers 30-32 with offices/restaurant/retail, a floating swimming pool, and view decks with a public access network. They propose 850 market and affordable housing units in approx. 15-20 story buildings across The Embarcadero to replace a parking lot and the Navigation Center on Seawall Lot 330. Strada/Trammel Crow are hosting a series of virtual office hours on this project.
• Pier 38-40 opposite Townsend Street: Pacific Waterfront Partners is negotiating with the Port to rehabilitate Piers 38-40 for a mixed use development w/improved maritime facilities, a flexible covered market and entertainment plaza with a restaurant opportunity and diversity program, public access and meeting facilities, and restaurant, retail and office space.
• Embarcadero Enhancement Project: The SF Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Embarcadero Enhancement Program–Central Embarcadero Safety Project (Mission Street to Broadway), sought input and surveyed community priorities last year on proposed changes to The Embarcadero, and completed construction. With new signage in place, bicyclists and motorized scooters have been moving to the new protected two-way bikeway. For more about the project, click here.
• Port Waterfront Resilience Program: The 2018 $425 million bond to begin restoring or replacing the Embarcadero Seawall is in early stages of planning, w/immediate seismic and flood protection upgrades targeted for completion by 2026. This is part of the Port Waterfront Resilience Program, an ambitious effort to deal with the challenges and opportunities along the waterfront.
• Port Pop-Up Activation Proposals: The Port is seeking businesses to deliver vibrant and diverse waterfront experiences while creating opportunities for small and local business participation. Seventeen of the 22 responses have qualified, and the Port will seek community input to fine tune proposals and deal with noise, transportation, etc. Please click here for more information.
• Port Mobile Vending Pilot Program: Port Mobile Vending Pilot Program: The Port will provide access to approx. 50 vending spaces to historically disadvantaged communities along the Waterfront, promoting an inclusive waterfront and consistent with State law allowing sidewalk vendors. First-come, first-serve permits will be issued to vendors with spaces available. Please click here for more information.
• 530 Sansome Fire Station w/Commercial or Residential Building: The City and developer Related California propose to rebuild Fire Station 13 along with private development of a 19-story building (either hotel, offices, fitness center and retail/restaurant; or 256 residential units). The development is now fully approved (with GTA support) and 1) deciding on a hotel or housing, and 2) getting a building permit are next.

Balcony doors can be locked both with the toggle lock in the door handle and a more secure deadbolt lock mounted on the bottom of the door frame (see photo).

If your sliding door doesn’t have such a deadbolt lock or it’s not working, you can request one (no charge) through a service call to the Administrative Office or better yet, a maintenance request on The Gateway’s resident portal.
